Scientific Objective

Chandrayaan-2's primary objectives were to demonstrate the ability to soft-land on the lunar surface and operate a robotic rover, and to expand lunar science across the board. Specific goals include studies of:
- Lunar topography and the preparation of high-resolution three-dimensional maps.
- Mineralogy and elemental abundance across the lunar surface.
- The lunar exosphere β its composition and variability.
- Signatures of hydroxyl and water ice, particularly in the south polar region.
- Surface thermo-physical properties and seismicity (via the lander instruments).
- Solar X-rays and their interaction with the lunar surface.
The orbiter continues to pursue these objectives. Its OHRC produces the highest-resolution images ever taken from lunar orbit, the DFSAR radar probes metres below the surface of permanently shadowed craters for water ice, and CLASS has mapped the abundance of elements such as sodium across the entire Moon for the first time.
